I’m really happy with the way Ersatz turned out; moreso than any mix since The Girl Will Scar You. Ersatz is loosely based on the works of Philip K. Dick; I tried to work in themes of paranoia, consumerism and the commodification of all things, the absence of free will, and despair with modern life. However, I also tried to make the album highly listenable and darkly uptempo.
To reflect the feeling of “unreality” that permeates Dick’s books, I used songs with chiptunes or highly processed instrumentation as a part of their sound. Ersatz sounds fairly different from other “dark” mixes I’ve done, and I think it’s the most “complete” mix I’ve made in ages. I hope you enjoy it!
(Fun fact: this album had the working title “Evil Beep.”)
